The story behind Portland's Most Famous New Year's Eve Party.
On December 31, 1990, Champagne Ball founder Mathew Weber went out to celebrate New Year's Eve. He hit a local hot spot where he waited in long lines to get a drink. He couldn't find his friends or a place to sit.
He still remembers his sense of disappoint that night and his thought that New Year’s Eve should be a special night. People should dress up, spend time with their friends and not stand in lines all night. And, most important, people ought to have fun!
The next year Weber threw a New Year’s Eve party at the Eastbank Saloon. 115 people showed up and the Champagne Ball was born. Twenty four years later the Champagne Ball has outgrown three venues including the Portland Marriott and The Governor Hotel (The Sentinel) and since 2000 the event has made its home at the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower.
Throughout the years Weber has done his best to hold true to the core values that have made the party such a success; make it fun, have plenty of bars so people don’t have to stand in long lines, hire excellent entertainment and ask that people dress for the occasion.
Lastly, if you’ve ever meet our founder you’ll know there's one other element that he feels is essential to the success of the Champagne Ball: Party favors! Weber strongly believes you can never have enough party favors.
The 2014 Champagne Ball will be packed with all those things that make the event such a success: great entertainment, plenty of space to dance, 17 bars to get you back on those dance floors quickly, enough food to fill you up (but not enough to slow you down) photo booths and photographers to catch you dressed in your best and a midnight count-down not to be missed.
