Sam Cartwright Johnson

After becoming initially inspired by his friend’s rendition of a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song, Sam Johnson dismissed his previous disinterest with music and first picked up the guitar at the age of fifteen. After a brief stint with the electric guitar he decidedly chose the acoustic to pursue the improvised style that his music teacher disregarded. It was shortly later in life when fate ensued and his uncle married into an Irish family, which led to the iconic My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields becoming his uncle-in-law, who was impressed by Johnson’s early compositions and brought him to the prestigious Grouse Lodge recording studio nearby Dublin, where they recorded Johnson’s debut 6 track demo. This was quickly forwarded to the inbox of BBC Introducing, where the EP gained a considerable degree of airplay and appreciation. It was when Johnson spent a year on the East Coast of Australia, however, where he constructed what was undoubtedly his finest material to date, leading to performances at the famed venues ‘Lizottes’ and the ‘Great Northern Hotel’ situated in Newcastle, AUS. A combination of vocals, guitar and songwriting abilities is what set Johnson apart from the other up-and-coming acoustic acts. His steady stream of independently original music is suitable for audiences both universal and niche, with a cool combination of folk, blues and rock to suit even the most uptight music critics.
