The Somerton Surf Life Saving Club was established in 1960 and has over fifty years experience in training young men and women to become valuable assets to their community. As part of the largest volunteer movement in Australia, our club is run by dedicated volunteers and operates primarily on donations from the community. Our membership base continues to grow steadily each year and it currently stands at over 1000 members - making us the largest Surf Life Saving Club in South
Australia.
During the summer season, we patrol every weekend, our members train every night and some mornings. On Saturdays, our massive Nipper program runs in the afternoon. Our highly visible location and cafe also attracts large numbers of locals, general public and visitors on a daily basis.
Our mission is simple: save lives on the beach through prevention, education and rescue services along a two mile stretch of coast. We work very closely with the community to provide a safe beach and aquatic environment. Our volunteers train diligently to be ready if and when the community needs our help. Some of our activities include:
• emergency search/rescue and medical services
• preventative programs to ensure beach visitors avoid danger (surveillance, safe swimming area, shark alarm, identification or rips, stinger sweep and first aid)
• surf swimming safety information through community education programs
• weekend patrols
• youth development programs
• healthy lifestyle programs
